InternetCoast Institute
In the beginning, a group of executives in high-technology companies located in South Florida realized that the three-county region was becoming a major hub for technology companies. As a result of the vision and dedication of this group, the InternetCoast was created with a focus on social innovation, entrepreneurship, and a knowledge based workforce to facilitate investment and drive economic growth. Today the InternetCoast has over six thousand participants and the strong support of the community, including the private sector, education, existing organizations, and local and state governments. One of the original founders of the InternetCoast was Scott Adams, a nationally known Internet technology pioneer, and alumnus of Florida Atlantic University. Recognizing that every successful high technology region requires a major research institution with a strong and significant university presence, Adams made a generous donation to FAU's College of Business to launch the InternetCoast Institute and its first component, the Adams Center for IT Entrepreneurship and Venture Capital. The second component is the office for Workforce Development that focuses on generating new opportunities for FAU technology students. These opportunities include co-ops, internships, and after graduation placements. By providing student work experiences, the center is meeting its goal of increasing the number of highly trained engineers and information technologists at FAU.
Adams chose FAU not only because he is an alumnus, but also because "FAU is a young, forward-thinking University that is very willing to embrace South Florida. By providing an endowment for the establishment of the Center, I am trying to enrich the soil in which South Florida's High-Tech industry is growing."
The InternetCoast Institute works closely with the InternetCoast to lead South Florida as a global science and technology hub. FAU faculty and staff members serve on various InternetCoast boards and Michael Corbit serves on the InternetCoast Institutes' Board of Directors.
